Kamikochi is situated in the Azusa River Valley some 1,500m above sea level.
Offering spectacular alpine scenery, including primeval forests and a live volcano, it is one of Japan’s premier destinations.

Crossing Tashiro Bridge, watch for the fish when you pass the swamp. After the trailhead, you start climbing gently up through the forest until you get to the valley pass. The trail zigzags up a steep slope through bamboo grass mixed with some dead trees before arriving at Shinnakao Pass, where you will find Yakedakegoya. A few minutes further on you come to the viewing platform - a spectacular place to see the sunset.

There are trails leading up to Yakedakegoya from all four directions, including Abo Pass, Kama Tunnel, Nakao Trailhead and Nishi-Hotaka Sanso (lodge). The trails are well maintained and fun to climb. Some sections have ladders, offering the real thrill of climbing. In about 2.5 hours, you reach the hut. During the climbing season, you can stay at the hut even without a reservation.
